This is Maarten, our master baker at Daelmans. He loves the Burgundian life and thinks life should be celebrated. That’s why Maarten loves festivals, concerts, restaurants and good food. He also enjoys road trips which include anything from the Pacific Highway 1 in the USA to a whisky tour in Scotland. Oh! and one other thing…Stroopwafels are a vital part of his celebrations!
Even as a small child Maarten always knew he wanted to be a baker. You could always find him helping in the bakery of his friend’s parents where he would grow from greasing the insides of bread cans to filling puffs and making fruit pastries. Maarten even made his first wedding cake by the age of 16.
He completed his education in 1999 where he learnt the culinary art of professional baking. Maarten then had the opportunity of joining Daelmans as a ‘rookie’ where he developed many skills from his mentor, Jan. He quickly progressed from a baker to an experienced craft cookie baker where he learnt the intricacies of making the perfect wafel dough, cooking stroop and operating the ovens for the ‘stroop lines’. In 2008 Maarten began working in our new larger bakery with his own team of bakers and he is now one of the proud master bakers at Daelmans.
Baking is in his heart and soul and his passion for making Stroopwafels is very clear. “Stroopwafels are simply the tastiest cookie” according to Maarten. “With their gooey stroop between two thin wafels layers they are second to none. Every day it gives me great pleasure to go to the bakery in Oss. The bakery smells so delicious and it feels like going home. It is a wonderful feeling seeing people eating and enjoying Stroopwafels. That is probably why you'll find us all over the world”.
